The Osceo Luna Suit was concepted by Javier Lazo a fellow graduate from Laguna College of art and design. I begged him to let me model it and this in the result. Still refining textures, but a very complex, but fun piece.

I have really wanted to get back to my tradition form of art which was pretty much pen and pencil sketch. This digital painting took approximately 7 hours to reach the point it's at now. I'm still working on issues here and there, but am rather please with its level of finish. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to lighting, composition and atmosphere (among other things). Hopefully with more works accomplished like this one, I'll get my skills a little closer to where I want to be.

A image from my current project. Definately out of my genre and comfort zone but it's been a great learning experience creating this and 3 other characters as a freelance modeler. Been hitting some roadblocks here and there, but over I get the feeling I might actually be able to pull this whole art career thing off.

The Rogue

The final character I created for my portfolio, the Rogue is a low poly character without normal maps. Coming in around 5000 polygons, the detail was achieved using painted textures. Definitely an area in which I need to improve, the Rogue was a whole new challenge separate from the high detail characters that preceded him. Manipulating the geometry to sell the idea of a realistic character although lacking the finite detail of normal maps, was difficult. I also realized that 5,000 polygons, although low in comparison to games such as Gears of War etc, is still a large number for consoles like the PSP or iPhone. The creation of this character, was a good reminded that less is more and I can't always rely on normal and displacement maps to achieve my detail, I need to be a decent texture artist as well as modeler.

Dog Sentry

The character that kicked off my senior portfolio, the Dog Sentry reflects my love of monsters and story telling. This mindless killing machine came in around 10,000 polygons, and like Caedus had his detail achieved through normal maps generated in Zbrush. The nicer Render at the top was done by Johnnie Estill, a mentor of mine that I am deeply appreciative to for helping me make my percieved portfolio become reality. As you can see if you look closely at the concept dsigns, the Dog Sentry was supposed to have a helmet that covers his non existent eyes, and receivers protruding from his back, that allows him to sense his surrondings. They sadly, did not make it into these renders, but will in the future, when I have time to revisit these characters.

Caedus

The most challenging character I created for my senior portfolio, Caedus comes in around 11,000 polygons (quads) his high level of detail was achieved using normals maps generated in Zbrush, the base mesh and rendering was done in Maya 2008. The final image here, was touched up in Photoshop CS4 to include background and special effects (sparks). I had at that point not yet created a character with both soft and hard surface. (I have a tendency to clad my characters in as little as possible because I have an obsession with the organic human body) So the cybernetic armor on Caedus created a huge challenge in my final semester at Laguna College of Art and Design. I bit off more than I could chew, but in the end he reached a point I was satisfied with, although lacking textures other than normals maps. The most important thing however, what the amount I learned in the process of tackling this character.

So until I have time to create a professional website to showcase my work, I will be posting my current projects on this blog. I am an artist, I most enjoy creating monsters, heroes and fantasy worlds. My main medium currently is 3D modeling, I enjoy the process of creating characters and assets whether it is for a digital illustration of animation. I have worked on Game Mods using the Half Life Engine and have had the honor of seeing my creations come to life in a video game. A huge fan of comics, I enjoy using the 3D medium to tell stories. My main goal is to become a better artist in every way and in turn give back to my community and fellow human.
